EAGLES SOAR TO GRAB TOP AWARD!
Elmbridge Eagles have topped off a fantastic 2017, picking up top club award at Elmbridge Borough Council's Annual Sports Awards. Eagles were awarded the ‘Mick Burgess’ Sports Club of the Year for 2017. This was on the back of the resurrection of the Open age side, Championship winner U14’s and both U16’s and U13 are making the grand final of their respective competitions. In addition to the fantastic individual efforts of Luke Drummond, who picked up international hours for Scotland at U19’s.
Such was the U14’s dominance they swept all aside in the London Junior League, before leading the clubs first overseas tour. Again the U14’s were too strong for the opposition, defeating 2 of Catalan Dragon’ feeder clubs. This outstanding year was topped off by winning Elmbridge council junior sports team of the year for 2017.
Luke Drumond received individual recognition for his performances in both the Open age at Eagles and on the international stage with Scotland U19’s. Luke was unlucky to leave the evening with only the runner-up trophy in the junior sports personality of the year.
Head coach at the Eagles, Kevin Rudd, commented: “The kids have been a pleasure to coach, and their parents have been outstanding across the age groups.” “I am fortunate to be around a good group of coaches from U7s up to the open age team, all displaying passion, integrity and technical knowledge of the game.”
Rudd continued: “We have pathways to the London Broncos scholarship system, as well as some other junior international programmes or to continue playing in their local community.” “I re-sat my coaching badges after 20 years,” he said. “And it has been refreshing to come out of sporting retirement to engage with, and help provide opportunities to, talented young guys at grassroots, who have genuine respect for the sport; I’d encourage others who have lapsed to give it a go.”
Charlie Tavener, chairman of Elmbridge Eagles, was full of praise “This has been another fantastic year for the Eagles, both on and off the field. From the players, who have put on such amazing displays, through to the coaches and volunteers, without their effort and sacrifices, we couldn’t have achieved what we have achieved this year.”
“I also think it’s important to thank all the parents for their input and support. From driving players to both training and matches, to taking the lead in fundraising and organising the Overseas tour. The many successes we have achieved this year wouldn’t have been possible, without their support.”
